This past Saturday was my BFA graduate show. I was able to include 6 pieces in the show, including Schematic, Prints, Routine, The New Romance, Origami Twist (see Portfolio section for pictures) and my latest piece entitled Red Letter Cape.

The cape is similar to my novel pieces in that I’m continuing to remove ‘dirty’ words from romance novels. With the cape, however, I took the words and hand-sewed them onto a cape I made with clear thread:

The show went really well, but I’m glad its done. Super stressful trying to wrangle 19 graduates into painting, cleaning, and setting up the school.

I was also part of a show about 6 weeks ago, but I forgot to post about it. It was a music show called I’ve got the music in me. It was pretty interesting & included three of my pieces:

Finally, The New Romance (my novels I’ve been working on) are completely finished (I think I finished them in February). I put them in a booth:

I’ll be including more pictures in the portfolio section later, but I took the books I made and put them into boxes inside the booth. One box had the original books with the words removed, the other had my ‘new’ ones. The viewer is forced to put their hands in the sides and read the books through a slit in the front of the boxes. I even put a red light in the booth - I wanted it to be a bit sleazy.

I’ve been working on more books for the New Romance project. I plan on finishing the 10 books in the series I have before April, but alas, I only have 2 completed at the moment.

Here is what my bed usually looks like when I’m working. As I remove the words from the novel I keep them in order of how I took them out:

Once I have a few chapters done, I glue them into the ‘new’ books. These new books are about 6inx4in. I scan the front of the real novel and crop it severely in photoshop. I use the crop as the cover of my new book:

Once I have a book completed, I sew the bind to finish it. Voila!

This is my brand new site, much much better than the previous one: dinexdashed.com

I’m still working out a few kinks, so if anything looks funky, it will eventually get fixed.

I hope to update often about what I’m working on, especially with school starting back up in a week. I’d like to show my work in process and maybe make posts about specific work in the portfolio section so that I can talk about how a particular piece came about/evolved, etc.

Feel free to look around and comment on anything you love or hate.

Thanks!
Shawna.

Also, for those of you who have come here from my previous site: yes, I am still making t-shirts. Please visit the Contact section if you’d like to discuss clothing, or feel free to leave a comment.
